One year ago this month, The Washington Post ran a story that not only extolled the use of the influenza vaccines but pushed for a new and improved version by saying, “Why wait for the pandemic to benefit from better flu vaccines?”(1) The story went on to say that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is planning to strengthen the flu shot “destined for the elderly” by adding an immune-boosting compound to the shot called an adjuvant.

An adjuvant is a substance added to produce a high antibody response using the smallest amount of virus (antigen) possible. By definition adjuvants are considered to be “pharmacologically active drugs.” They are designed to be “inert without inherent activity or toxicity” and yet they are required to “potently augment effects of the other compounds” in the vaccines. It is difficult to explain how a substance can be defined as “pharmacologically active” and at the same time be described as “inert and have no activity or toxicity.”

The limiting factor for approval of new adjuvants has been that most are far too toxic for use in humans. However, one adjuvant has been approved in Europe and its approval is on the way for use in the U.S. It is an oil-based adjuvant called MF-59, a compound primarily composed of squalene.

On first blush, squalene seems like a good choice for an adjuvant. Manufactured naturally in the liver, squalene is a precursor for cholesterol. In addition, squalene can be purchased at health food stores in its more commonly known form, “shark liver oil.” However, ingested squalene has a completely different effect on the body than injected squalene. When molecules of squalene enter the body through an injection, even at concentrations as small as 10 to 20 parts per billion, it can lead to self-destructive immune responses, such as autoimmune arthritis and lupus.(3)

Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this reaction. Metabolically, squalene stimulates an immune response both excessively and nonspecifically. More than two dozen peer-reviewed scientific papers from ten different laboratories throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia have been published documenting the development of autoimmune disease in animals subjected to squalene-based adjuvants.(4) A convincing proposal for why this occurs includes the concept of “molecular mimicry” in which an antibody created against the squalene in MF59 can cross react with the body’s squalene on the surface of human cells. The destruction of the body’s own squalene can lead to debilitating autoimmune and central nervous system diseases.

The squalene in MF59 is not the only cause for concern. One of its components, Tween80 (polysorbate 80) is considered by vaccine manufacturers to be “inert” but is far from it. A study published in December, 2005 discovered that Tween80 can cause anaphylaxis, a sometimes fatal reaction characterized by a sharp drop in blood pressure, hives, and breathing difficulties. Researchers concluded that the severe reaction was not a typical allergic response characterized by the combination of IgE antibodies and the release of histamines; it was caused by a serious disruption that had occurred within the immune system.(5)

Vaccine manufacturer Chiron is already using MF59 in its European influenza vaccine for seniors called Fluad(TM). It remains to be seen if Chiron will gain approval for using this adjuvant-containing vaccine in the U.S. In the mean time–and for the first time–all children from age six months to five years will be targeted for the flu shot this fall. Expect even more children to be on the vaccine list as early as 2007; discussions are underway to mandatorily vaccinate the healthy five to nine year-old group as a school requirement.

A record 121 million doses of flu vaccine was produced for the 2006-2007 flu season and production is being ramped up to 140 million doses for the coming flu season. Be prepared for a huge push to get everyone vaccinated this fall. Consider it to be psychological pre-conditioning. The plan is to get each person ready–and eager–to roll up their sleeve for an injection of the “pandemic” flu vaccine when it becomes available.

Retaining freedom of choice will become increasingly important for those who want to refuse. Get politically active by joining the American Association for Health Freedom at health freedom, the organization on Capitol Hill that lobbies for a person’s right to choose and the practitioners right to practice. Self-appointed experts at the WHO and the CDC who really believe the only way to survive a pandemic to be innoculated with viruses and chemicals will be pressuring you to comply. Don’t let the bird flu vaccine become mandatory in your State.

When the media begins to, once again, shriek about the coming bird flu pandemic by urging everyone to be vaccinated, remember that the bird flu vaccine will be largely untested. Worse, it will be no more effective than the annual flu shot and there is a high probability it will contain MF-59.

Because of concern about flu shot side effects, many people are interested in homeopathic remedies for flu viruses, while others focus on protecting and maintaining a healthy immune system. Here we look at typical flu shot side effects, as well as some homeopathic remedies for flu viruses.

Homeopathic healers, herbalists, doctors of natural medicine and conventional medical doctors all have differing opinions about how best to protect yourself from and/or treat the flu. These professionals may also have differing opinions about flu shot side effects and about whether or not everyone should get an annual flu shot. There is no question that some people are definitely more likely to contract viruses like colds and flus. The flu poses a greater risk to people who have a weakened immune system, because they are more likely to contract the virus and they are more likely to develop complications from the virus. Homeopathic remedies for flu might not be the best choice for someone with a weakened immune system.

Once a person contracts the flu, natural and homeopathic remedies for flu are just as effective as any other treatment. Anti-viral medications are available and may be recommended for some high risk individuals, but they must be taken with the first two days after symptoms appear. Because of concern over flu shot side effects, many people do not take the shot, but should make efforts to protect, boost and maintain a healthy immune system, particularly during cold and flu season.

Typical flu shot side effects include fever, body aches and soreness, redness or swelling at the point where the shot was given. The nasal spray vaccine is different, because it contains live weakened flu viruses and may cause runny nose, headache, sore throat and cough. These are no more desirable than flu shot side effects, but some prefer the nasal spray vaccine because it is preservative free. Thimerosal, a mercury based preservative, was commonly used in flu shots, until recently and was believed to add to the list of possible flu shot side effects. Now, there are preservative free flu shots, but it may be necessary to request them, specifically.

Homeopathic remedies for flu would differ form herbal remedies and preventatives, because homeopathic healers view illnesses differently. After looking at all of an individual’s symptoms, homeopathic remedies for flu or other conditions are chosen that would cause those same symptoms if taken at higher dosages. It is referred to as treating same with same. Those who choose to use homeopathic remedies for flu or other conditions should follow directions carefully and discontinue use if symptoms worsen or if new symptoms develop.

If you prefer to avoid possible flu shot side effects and homeopathic remedies for flu sound unappealing to you. You can still protect yourself by using herbal, vitamin and mineral products that have been shown in scientific studies to effectively boost the immune system, relieve flu symptoms, reduce recovery time and reduce the likelihood of developing life threatening complications, such as pneumonia. Unlike flu shot side effects and homeopathic remedies for flu viruses, these products are completely safe and have no unwanted side effects.

Flu vaccines have been very popular over the past months as the infamous Swine Flu scare spread across continents. But how much do you really know about this immunization? Do you understand the means to take it, the possible side effects and the common myths about it? Well it would eventually pay off to learn.

Flu vaccines can be taken as a shot or a nasal mist. As injection, the flu shot contains killed flu viruses that will prepare your body to fight infection caused by live flu virus. The nasal mist vaccine on the other hand contains weakened live flu viruses. However, the mist is not ideal for people with weak immune systems.

Although flu vaccines reduce the chances of catching flu by up to 80%, there is no guarantee that you are 100% protected against getting sick. The benefit is that if you have gotten the shot and then still get the flu, symptoms will be fewer and milder.

On Side Effects

Most people don’t experience any side effects after having the flu shot. The most common side effects however are just soreness or swelling at the site of the injection and mild headaches or low-grade fever.

These side effects would usually last only for a day as the flu could knock you off for 2 to 3 weeks. Not mentioning complications associated with it such as pneumonia, sinus infections, and other respiratory problems.

Ironically, the common myth regarding flu vaccines is that taking the shot would actually cause the flu. That is not true. Flu shots are made from killed influenza viruses – making it impossible to catch the flu upon receiving it. Though, nasal spray flu vaccine is made from live viruses that may cause mild flu-like symptoms, but that’s just it.

Effective Preventive Measures

Actually there’s really no guaranteed way to prevent anyone from getting the flu – not even flu vaccines. As it is essential to know the basic details on this immunization, precautions are still the best way to protect you and your family.

It should be relatively easy to find a place for flu shot vaccinations this year, depending on where you live. Local flu shots are offered at a variety of places. In 2003, 83 million doses of flu vaccine were distributed. It is estimated that a similar number of the population were able to find a place for flu shot vaccines in the 2005-2006 flu season. Approximately 4% of people surveyed were unable to find a place for flu shot vaccines, or the vaccine was unavailable.

The Center for Disease Control does not foresee any shortage of local flu shots for the upcoming season. If your doctor does not provide annual flu shots, there are a number of other facilities that offer the vaccine every year. During the last flu season, 19% of those people vaccinated only had to go to work or school to find a place for flu shots. It is becoming more common for large companies to offer flu shot clinics on-site to employees. The corporate belief is that flu shot vaccinations may prevent large outbreaks and reduce the number of “sick calls”.

Many colleges and universities hosted flu shot clinics in the last season, so that students would not have to search for local flu shots. In an environment where many people are in close contact with each other on a daily basis, outbreaks are fairly common. Colleges and universities subscribe to the same belief as much of corporate America, in that prevention by vaccination reduces absences.

County and city health departments typically offer local flu shots. During the last season 8% of those people who received the vaccine went to their local health department. Most city and county governments have websites that provide information on where to find a place for flu shot vaccinations in your area, even if the health department does not offer them.

In recent years, the pharmacy department of many large retailers, such as Costco and Sam’s Club, offered local flu shots. In the last season 10% of those people who were vaccinated received the shot at a “store”. If you have a large retailer in your area, this may be where you can find a place for flu shot vaccinations this year. Costco pharmacy does plan to offer local flu shots again this year. Check with your local retailers for dates and information concerning this year’s flu shot plans.

If you live in a senior center or nursing home, most of them provide on-site local flu shots. The recreation centers in many areas often host flu shot clinics, as well. Hospital, healthcare workers and residents of nursing homes are among the people who are at greatest risk of contracting the flu and nursing home residents are at high risk of developing life-threatening complications from influenza. It is usually easy for high risk people to find a place for flu shot vaccinations. When supplies are limited, public health organizations advise that high risk individuals should get the first shots.

While 39% of all persons vaccinated did visit their doctor or HMO provider for the shot last season, there were alternatives for local flu shots, even for those people who do not have health insurance. Companies like Costco help people find a place for flu shot vaccinations and provide them at a lower price.

Have you had a flu shot this year yet?

Tom Smith did and he quickly regretted it. He had a flu shot in his right arm eleven days ago and now his upper arm and shoulder area is killing him! He thinks the flu jab must have hit a nerve. He’s in a panic and asking “What should I do about this? The pain radiates down my arm and into my neck. It also keeps me up for several hours a night. Will the pain from this flu shot go away soon?”

Ron Evans’ mother had the same problem and now he worries what might happen to him. Countless people around the world are worried about an influenza outbreak but don’t protect themselves because they are even more worried about how the vaccination might affect them! What should you do? Will you get side effects too?

Abbie said:

“I had a very bad reaction to a jab recently too. My doctor gave me the shot high up on the shoulder and to be honest I have never seen a flu shot given that way. I asked her about it but she said that it needed to be given deep into the muscle. I could actually feel the pain as she gave the injection – yuk – it really was horrible and within an hour my shoulder was achy and it was the worst I have ever felt after any kind of vaccination. It’s now gone over a week and my shoulder is still aching and I can still hardly lift my arm or shoulder.”

Would all of this put you off having a jab? Don’t make your mind up yet – read below before you decide!

Flu shots or flu vaccinations can cause pain for a number of reasons.

The commonest reason is that some people develop a minor allergic type reaction to the flu virus contained in the vaccine – or more rarely to the stuff that is in the liquid used to make up the vaccine.

The arm becomes warm, swollen and tender and this can persist for up to two weeks. If it is very severe then you should see a doctor for some treatment.

Some experts think that a reaction like this indicates an aggressive response by your immune system to the flu virus in the vaccine – indicating that your immune system will thereafter be very efficient at fighting off flu should you be exposed to it.

Simple remedies to take if your arm reacts like this to a flu jag include over the counter painkillers like Tylenol or paracetamol. You can also apply an ice pack or take an antihistamine tablet.

It is also important to let the doctor or nurse know that you reacted like this so a note can be put on your records. You should also mention a reaction like this before you have another flu shot next year

A vaccination against influenza could literally save your life this year. Don’t rush into a decision not to have one before you really think it through properly.

The flu shot is always a hot topic of discussion this time of year. There is always such a sense of panic and fear that sends people running to get their flu shot. I’m always the “odd man out”, for I go running in the opposite direction. The toxins in the vaccines create side effects for some that are as bad as or worse than the flu such as muscle aches, sore throat, fever, chills, congestion, sneezing and headache. There are many undesirable ingredients in the flu vaccine that we don’t hear much about such as Triton X-100 (a detergent); Polysorbate 80 (a potential carcinogen); formaldehyde (a known carcinogen); Aluminum (linked to Alzheimer’s disease) and Thimerosal, (a mercury based preservative) which is being investigated for its link to brain injury, memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and autoimmune diseases. Hugh Fundenberg, MD an immuno- geneticist and biologist with nearly 850 papers published in peer review journals, has reported that if an individual had 5 consecutive flu shots between 1970 and 1980 (the years studied), his or her chances of getting Alzheimer’s Disease is 10 times higher than if they had 1 or 2 flu shots due to the mercury content. Autism is also being linked to vaccinations due to the mercury. Many doctors of natural medicine believe that and vaccines are “quick fixes” that suppress and or destroy our own immunity leaving humanity as sitting ducks for new strains of pathogens which mutate faster than the vaccines are produced. By the time one gets the flu shot, there will be newly mutated strains that will not be covered with the current shot. It will be covered in next years shot, but the same cycle will occur.

Whether one chooses the flu shot or not, there are safe and effective ways to build immunity and ward off the flu as well as other respiratory problems. The obvious is to eat a healthy diet eliminating or greatly reducing; soda’s, refined flour, sugar and artificial sweeteners (including sucralose), alcohol, caffeine and tobacco. Exercise regularly, obtain adequate sleep and drink plenty of purified water. The Center of Disease Control states that dirty hands are the leading cause of spreading disease and advises that all adults and children wash their hands with soap and water many times throughout the day.

There are nutritional supplements that specifically support the immune system. There are popular homeopathic flu remedies such as Oscillococcinum by Boiron that can be taken as a preventative; just a few pellets under the tongue 3 times a week. Silver water in the form of colloidal or ionized silver has been used for centuries and has anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. A teaspoon a day may be used as prevention during flu season. My favorite brand is Silver Biotics Concentrated oil of Mediterranean wild oregano has been proven to have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and may be consumed at 5-10 drops a few times a day with food. Elderberry is a popular anti-viral herb that is sometimes traded under the name of Sambucol. There are many effective immune enhancing formulas which contain many vitamins, minerals, herbs and homeopathics that target immune system support. Some of these nutrients include; colostrum, goldenseal, echinacea, elderberry, zinc, astragalus, garlic, olive leaf, silver, vitamins A,B,C, E, and so on.

Nourishing the immune system is like building a second line of defense. It’s simple… If you are healthy…you won’t get sick.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that everyone under the age of 6 and over the age of 50, in addition to other groups of people with specific medical conditions, should get the influenza (flu) vaccine. And in general pretty much everyone is encouraged to get a flu shot. But is there any evidence that it will actually be helpful for you? The answer is probably not.

The often quoted figure is that 36,000 people die from the flu every year. However about half of those are deaths relate to ‘flu like illness’. Amongst the half that is due to the flu, there are several different strains of influenza virus, and the flu vaccine is going to target only a selected number of them. Add to that that the vaccine is made before the flu season starts, and they don’t know which strains will be showing up that year, that means that a lot of people are not going to get a flu shot that actually protects them against the flu. In addition many of the deaths are in the elderly who may have compromised immune systems, so the flu shot won’t work for them anyway. In fact the only group for which there is evidence that flu shots might save lives is with people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is caused by smoking.

But I can’t afford to lose time from work with the flu, you say. Actually no studies have shown that flu shots reduce time lost from work either.

The experts in the literature are actually saying not to use flu vaccines, although noone seems to listen to them. Quoting epidemiologist Tom Jefferson below: from an article in BMJ. “The optimistic and confident tone of some predictions of viral circulation and of the impact of inactivated vaccines, which are at odds with the evidence, is striking. The reasons are probably complex and may involve a ‘messy blend of truth conflicts and conflicts of interest making it difficult to separate factual disputes from value disputes’ or a manifestation of optimism bias (an unwarranted belief in the efficacy of interventions).”

Translation: Politicians think that flu vaccines work (but they don’t).
