To all the uninformed out there, the football season has a curse lurking over its shoulder. A lot of athletes refuse to acknowledge it, but it does exist. The evidence is too overwhelming. Of course we are talking about the Madden Curse.
What is the so-called “Madden Curse” you might ask? Well the madden curse is what happens to whatever athlete is displayed on the cover of the newest edition of the hugely popular John Madden football video game series. What happens? Quite simply, they get injured! They might get injured for 1 game, or in the example of the Atlanta Falcons ex-quarterback Michael Vick, they lose their athletes for damn near the whole year! Michael Vick was the featured athlete on Madden ’04 and was lost to the Atlanta falcons on a knee injury during their 04-05 season! It doesn’t matter the severity of the injury or the length of the injury, it seems that as long as the athlete is injured, the Madden Curse is satisfied! A little known fact is that not only does the Madden Curse affect the featured athlete on the cover, it also affects the team that the athlete is on!
Case in point, the 2006 cover of Madden featured quarterback Donovan Mcnabb of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were fresh from their Super Bowl run the year before against the New England Patriots, (we’ll get into that later) and expectations were high among Eagle fans (myself included), for the team to return to the Super Bowl, and this time to win! Unfortunately, it was not to be. I knew that this was going to be a bad year because of the Madden Curse. And when I mentioned this to those less informed I was told, “You’re crazy! We’re going all the way to the Super Bowl!”. That years’ Eagle team barely made the playoffs and we lost Donovan Mcnabb for a good part of the season to various injuries. Now the New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was susposed to be on the cover of that years Madden also. And at the last minute, for whatever reason, respectfully declined. Think about it. The New England Patriots had the monicker of “Dynasty” put on them after their win against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl because this was their third Super Bowl win in four seasons. So “Dynasty” was an accurate title for the team. But during that whole “Dynasty” run, not ONE member of the Super Bowl winning Patriots was on the cover of any Madden from ’02 to ’06. Isn’t that odd to you? That a Super Bowl quarterback wouldn’t want to be featured on the cover of Madden! According to quite a few of NFL athletes, being featured on the cover of Madden is one of the highest honors that can happen to you as an NFL player! Why wouldn’t a Super Bowl winning quarterback be featured on the cover of the most popular football video game in the world? Hmmmmm……
It was also rumored that in the same year, MVP of the 2006 NFL season, running back Ladanian Thomas’ entire fan base in San Diego signed a petition against him being on the cover of Madden because they didn’t want him to get hurt. Coincidence? I think not! If you were to go and investigate from the year that NFL athletes were first put on the cover of Madden, you will find that everyone of the featured athletes were injured in that particular year. There are entirely to many examples to reference to give proof to the Madden Curse and we could go on and on but instead I will give you a reason why Brett Favre may be the first to break it!
Brett Favre’s off season activities were the result of a man that had not searched himself before retiring. His retirement in my opinion, was a emotional decision instead of a physical one. Because of this, Brett Favre retired too early, and upon realizing that he had made a mistake, decided that he wanted to come back! Only one problem, the Green Bay Packers had moved on! And because of this, Brett Favre is now a New York Jet! If you look at the cover of Madden ’09, it’s Brett Favre on the cover in a Green Bay Packer uniform. As I said before, it seems that the Madden Curse only effects the athlete and the team, if he is on the SAME team throughout the year. Because Brett is now on the New York Jets, we are in new territory here! Does that mean that Green Bays’ new quarterback AAron Rogers is going to have a bad year? Does this mean that the Green Bay Packers are destined to have a bad year? We don’t know! We do know that Brett Favre is on the cover in a Green bay uniform and because of this I think that the curse will finally be broken! It could mean that the New York Jets could have a bad year! I don’t know whats going to happen! But it will be an interesting year. Just hope that next year your favorite NFL athlete is not on the cover of Madden!

Those words in the lyrics of the song Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel, was a call to bring back what was wholesome and good about America. Joe was a hero in America; to old and young alike. It is amazing how today’s real heroes in sports, just quietly go about their business doing what they do best without their names showing up in the tabloids or on the crime pages of today’s newspapers. You will not see names like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Phil Mickleson or Maria Sharapovia just to name a few. However, what you will hear is how they give back to their communities.
You have already seen the names of Kobe Bryant, Chris Benoit, Michael Irvin, O.J. Simpson, Pachman Jones, Tim Donaghy and many more on the headlines of almost every media outlet in America and the rest of the free world. It seems like the concept of a wholesome sports role model is far and few between.
What most people do not know is that DiMaggio signed on as a rookie for a salary of $8,000 in his first season. Today’s players earn that and more in one- inning, one basketball period, one hockey period or one football quarter.
The moment sports figures ink their multi-million dollar contracts they put themselves and their actions, on and off the playing field under the most intense public scrutiny. In addition, the media stands by like hungry wolves just waiting for the next athlete to fall from grace. Knowing that they will receive tremendous amounts of scrutiny for their bad behavior, you would believe it would behoove them to be more careful in their actions on and off the field. Nevertheless, I guess they feel they are untouchable.
The latest athlete to fall off his pedestal is Michael Vick, a quarterback for the Atlanta, Falcons. He got caught up in a dog fighting consortium where it is alleged that he was responsible for not only breeding American Bull Terriers (Pit Bulls) for fighting and promoting dog fighting, but killing the losers of the fights with torturous and inhumane acts; such as drowning, electrocution, shooting or just beating them to death.
Michael Vick earned over $200,000 per quarter. (Do the math-$130 Million over ten-seasons, fifteen- games per season.) Not a bad job for throwing around a football. That does not take into consideration his product endorsements. Therefore, why would an athlete earning that kind of money get caught up in a dog fighting and gambling scheme. Is it that he was just bored in the off- season?
I have heard people making statements that condone this behavior comparing it to the bullfights in Spain. Some have even said, “Hey, we slaughter cattle don’t we.” I did not know that slaughtering pit bulls was adding to the food chain.
What is worse even yet is that people try to turn a blind eye to the fact that these so-called great American heroes have been arrested for drugs, assault, reckless and drunk driving and even murder. As long as they can hit another home run, score another hat trick or throw another touchdown pass who cares if they beat their wives or children. “The girl was probably asking to be raped and the person murdered in a bar room brawl probably deserved to die,” are some of the comments you hear. Take the case of Lonnie Baxter, who was arrested for firing a gun aimlessly from a moving car only a few blocks from the White House; who knows what damage he could have done. Mike Tyson bit off Evander Holifield’s ear in the ring. That was after he got out of prison for raping a woman. In addition, they gave him back his boxing license! Super Bowl champion linebacker Ray Lewis was being tried for murder until he plea- bargained to a lesser charge. We used to think that John McEnroe screaming at tennis referees was outrageous.
Some of today’s athletes, it seems continually tarnish the leagues that have made them rich and famous. However, as the song goes, “what goes up must come down, spinning wheels all around.” Falling from grace isn’t so bad; it’s the sudden stop at the bottom that gets you hurt.
With the advent of 24-hour sports broadcasting and Internet reporting, the exploits of the most popular sports figures are always headline news. The biggest problem is that our children are able to see their behavior and put them up as role models. You only have to look at the walls in your children’s room to see pictures and posters of athletes who our children idolize. You only have to watch the commercials on television to see an athlete pushing a product or conducting an interview.
Michael Vick is quoted as saying, “It don’t matter what I did, or what I do, people are always gonna love me anyway.” Does he feel he is really above the law, because he is rich and famous or because he is black?
I don’t want you to think that my last comment makes me a racist. I am not. You only have to read my book to know what I really believe. However, when the NAACP comes out in a news conference and states that the only reason Michael Vick is being singled out is that he is black, it is counterproductive to what they claim they stand for. If they want to be a force for social justice then they must speak up for black and white together. I have not heard them say one word about Tim Donaghy being innocent until proven guilty. Is the fact that they have not blasted the media for claiming that Barry Bonds is using steroids because the record he is attempting to surpass belongs to a Hank Aaron a black baseball player and a great American hero.
It will be a sad day in American sports if Michael Vick is convicted and continues to play football after serving his sentence.
If you want to stand for social justice in this world, then you have to live by the words of the late Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King who said, “I dream of the day when a man is judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.”
And, that’s my opinion.
1. Miami Dolphins- Chris Long DE UVA
The Dolphins will look closely at Ellis and Dorsey here, but end the end Long will be the man taken. The defense is getting too old and youth is needed ASAP.
2. St. Louis Rams- Glenn Dorsey DT LSU
Combined with Carriker, the Rams will rebuild their front 4 stronger and younger.
3.* Atlanta Falcons- Darren McFadden HB Arkansas
A small part of me wants to believe Michael Vick will be back after next season. And if that’s the case, combining Vick with McFadden could be deadly. Either way Chris Redman played fine down the stretch and you can always take a QB in round 2 if you absoulutely need to develop one along with D Mac.
4.** Oakland Raiders- Sedrick Ellis DT USC
The best player at the Senior Bowl gets to fill right in for Warren Sapp. They wont even miss big 99.
5.** Kansas City Chiefs- Jake Long OT Michigan
They have to replace Willie Sheilds among others. We saw what this man did for Mike Hart, can he do the same for LJ?
6. New York Jets- Vernon Gholston DE OSU
The Jets are LUCKY they are still going to get a great player at 6. Gholston is just what the doctored ordered for this defense.
7. New England Patriots (from San Francisco 49ers)- Dan Connor LB PSU
Hear me out. The Pats do have a lot of free agent corners but those needs can be met later in the draft or in free agency. A coach like Belichick is always going to take the player that fits best in his system over anyone else and that is exactly what Connor is. A smart sure tackler who is two decades younger than Junior Seau.
8. Baltimore Ravens- Ryan Clady OT Boise State
This is where the draft gets interesting. The Ravens can go a lot of ways, but they need a OL in the worst way.
9. Cincinnati Bengals- Keith Rivers LB USC
The Bengals have had terrible picks at LB the last few years with AJ Nicholson and David Pollack. Get it right finally.
10. New Orleans Saints- Leodis McKlevin CB Troy
I can outrun Jason David. Not good.
11. Buffalo Bills- Malcom Kelly WR Oklahoma
The Youtube rapping sensation gets to collab with Money Lynch for his next track.
12. Denver Broncos- Chris Williams OT Vandy
They need to protect Cutler, why not take a guy who has experience doing JUST THAT?
13. Carolina Panthers- Kenny Phillips S The U
I think Matt Moore played well enough to justify passing on a QB. Kenny Phillips is the pick.
14. Chicago Bears- Matt Ryan QB BC
Matty Ice gets to take over for Grossman.
15. Detroit Lions- Mike Jenkins CB USF
Dre Bly is gone, so they need another player who can fulfil guarding the opposing team’s #1 WR.
It is official; Michael Vick is done with the rest of the NFL season. After deferring to his attorneys, the NFL quarterback has decided to accept a plea deal regarding the dog fighting operation. Vick will be spending at least ten months in jail for his actions. It was fairly obvious that Vick was headed to prison after a significant amount of incriminating evidence was found against him.
The defense attorney (Lawrence Woodward) for Michael Vick stated, “Mike’s accepting full responsibility. He’s going to do everything he can personally and professionally to make this situation right.” Another one of Michael’s lawyers (Billy Martin) went on to say, “After consulting with his family over the weekend, Michael Vick asks that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors regarding the charges pending against him. Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his action and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter.” The Atlanta Falcons invested $ 130 million in Michael Vick, but it has come to no avail. Fortunately, the Falcons will be able to reclaim at least $ 22 million of that $ 130 million contract. To make matters worse, Vick will not be able to play in the NFL until the 2010 football season. More likely than not, the pro bowl quarterback will be waived from the Atlanta Falcons after serving time in jail.
Ticket sales will drastically plummet because Michael Vick was the box office attraction; moreover, he was the guy who filled the Georgia Dome with fans. The Michael Vick fiasco is like watching an episode of Cops. In virtually every episode of Cops, the criminal always denies that the drugs in the truck are his/hers. Furthermore, the criminals shrugs their shoulders and says “I don’t know how those drugs got there” or “those drugs aren’t mine” or “I was set up.” In reality, the criminals always know how the drugs got there because they put them there. Similarly, Michael Vick is doing the same thing. The only difference is instead of drugs, Vick is using dogs. Initially, Michael denied he had anything to do with this transgression.
In reality, Mr. Vick knew how the dog killing equipment was at his property because he put them there. It appears that Michael Vick will not be barking out audibles at the line of scrimmage this NFL season (get it, I came up with that one all by myself). The old saying “if you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime” is in full effect here. For violating the NFL conduct policy, Michael Vick will be violated in prison (unless he sent to a jail with cellmates that have erectile dysfunction). With or without Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcons are already mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
