Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and the number of people affected by it is on the rise. Even people who watch carefully what they are eating may experience rise in blood glucose as they age or their cells may become less sensitive to the effects of insulin. Certain ethnic groups are more susceptible to having diabetes than others. They include African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics and Native Americans.
The body regulates blood sugar levels in several ways. The most common understood way is through insulin; thus all of the drugs targeted at either increasing insulin from the pancreas or making the cells more responsive to insulin. Insulin is released by the pancreas in response to a meal. Insulin will get into the cells and proper sugar (glucose) metabolism occurs. If insulin cannot get into the cells, then the pancreas in response will increase the production of insulin in an attempt to force glucose into the cells. However, this may not always work and the result is the ever increasing levels of glucose in the blood.
There are several pharmaceutical drugs used for the treatment of diabetes. They each act in different ways to optimize insulin sensitivity in the body, but ultimately the goal is to control or lower the level of blood glucose in the body. Your physician will be able to choose the best treatment for you based on your glucose levels and the reason for which your body is not utilizing insulin properly.
There is good news for people wanting to naturally regulate their blood sugar. Scientists have discovered that along with weight loss and exercise, certain nutrients can help the body lower blood sugar naturally. Cinnamon is such a nutrient. Cinnamon is one of the world’s most common spices. It is used on everything anywhere from oatmeal to cappuccino. We will discuss the effects of coffee on blood glucose levels later. Several studies have been performed that showed that cinnamon is beneficial in lowering blood glucose.
For years there have been several studies done to prove the effects of Cinnamon in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results of the most recent of these studies appeared in the May 2006 issue of the European Journal of Clinical investigation1. The results of the study showed a 10 percent reduction in fasting blood glucose in the group that was given cinnamon extract and only a 3 percent reduction in the placebo group which led the scientists to conclude that the cinnamon extract seems to have a moderate effect in reducing fasting glucose concentrations in diabetic patients with poor glycemic control.
The above study is only the most recent done in humans that showed reduction of blood glucose after administration of cinnamon extract. The benefits of cinnamon extract have been confirmed in animal studies. For example, when rats were given two different doses of an oral cinnamon supplement for three weeks, glucose infusion into their cells more than doubled, even with the lower dose studied. The extract improved insulin action by enhancing the insulin-signaling pathway in skeletal muscle, resulting in increased glucose uptake2.
Because the incidence of cardiovascular disease is increased up to fourfold in type II diabetics, researchers have sought out nutrients that can simultaneously improve glucose metabolism and lipid levels. In a recent study published in Diabetes Care, cinnamon has been able to reduce not only the glucose levels but was also able to lower the lipid levels3.
It is not surprising that the diabetes epidemic is growing. It is caused directly by our lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. Fortunately, we can implement several easy habits in our life to reverse the effects of diabetes; habits such as regular exercise, nothing fancy a 30-minute walk every day or 10,000 steps per day which will help achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Finally we can give our body several nutrients such as cinnamon extract which can help our cells with the uptake of sugar thus lowering our circulating blood glucose.

I believe that you have heard about cinnamon? Perhaps one of your friends has advised you to use it not only for spice purposes, but to help you optimize blood sugar levels. And now, you are wondering can I use it for this purpose or not?
I may say a big “Yes”. Your friend is right. Cinnamon may really help control diabetes. I will try to show you how to use cinnamon to lower blood sugar and how to get advantage of diabetes and cinnamon link.
Now, if something works to lower your blood sugar, that means that this “thing” does have an or some ingredients that make it happen.
The same works even for cinnamon. Its components make it as a special spice to manage diabetes.
First, cinnamon contains MHCP, which makes the insulin receptors more effective. Also it mimics insulin because it is very alike to it. This action may help those suffering from insulin resistance.
Next, cinnamon may stimulate pancreas to produce more insulin. And this is very important for type 2 diabetics. I feel sorry to say that this action is not appropriate for type 1 diabetics, because their pancreas cannot produce insulin at all.
What is more, cinnamon helps your stomach to empty slower. In this way your blood sugar levels do not raise quickly to reach their peak.
As you may see, all the three mechanisms indicate the help of cinnamon to lower blood sugar and to better control diabetes.
How can you use cinnamon?
It is very easy. You may add its powder in any drink you have (coffee, tea, juice, any dish) or you may prepare your own cinnamon tea. Just put a cinnamon stick in a boiling water and here you have your tea.
In case you may not like its taste (although it is so nice), you may get its extract in some supplements.
Enjoy life. Stay healthy. Taste cinnamon spice for the sake of your diabetes.
Maintaining blood sugar levels that are consistently within the normal range between 4.5 – 5.5 mg/dl or if you are from the US then multiply that figure by 18 to give you the mmol reading. Is the number one bane of most type 2 diabetics lives. We wake up reasonably cheerful, feeling ok; we have not eaten anything too terrible the night before so let’s do a quick blood test to see how things are. Low and behold you’re in double figures! What the hell but I haven’t eaten anything. No you probably haven’t.
The crafty thing about your blood sugar and your general diabetic bio chemistry is that is has a memory. Don’t think that the huge plate of pasta you consume at the bbq two days ago has been forgotten. All those carbohydrates had to go someone and in the process your pancreas has basically given you the middle finger as a kind of slap down. An article is not long enough to go into the intricate workings of type 2 diabetes but to keep it simple. if you want your blood sugar levels to stay within a normal healthy range. You are going to have to keep your diet simple as well.
For a start, never kick your C factor or carbohydrate burning cycle into play in the morning. Kind of like a smoker, sure, he can go hours without one during sleep but the moment he sparks up the first one his body will be craving for the rest of the day.
A major rule to keeping blood sugar levels normal for diabetics is to allow their bio chemistry to exert its metabolism how it is supposed to. Namely the fat burning cycle. To do this you should start the day with a protein or Greens breakfast. Omelette, cheese and cold meats, broccoli soup. Anything, just don’t put two bowls of cereal down your neck, you’ll only be setting your metabolism up for carb cravings for the rest of the day.
The control of blood sugar with diet is nothing new. We all know when we are eating wrong and we don’t need anyone to tell us so. Just like a smoker knows that they would be much better off if they quit, a bad eater knows what they shoudn’t eat to be healthier.
Diabetes without insulin is possible and should be the goal of every diabetic.. Getting motivated seems to be the hard part for most people. It’s not easy to stop eating junk food when everyone else is doing it and it’s always easier to get.
The risk factors of diabetes should be enough to motivate anyone. Who wants heart disease, blindness, loss of limbs or kidney damage. All of these risks can be avoided with proper diet therapy in managing diabetes.
Treatment of diabetic complications begins with a diabetic friendly diet, it’s never too late to get started. A more aggressive diet and treatment of diabetes should be started without delay.
A diabetic diet rich in low glycemic foods is a priority in the first step to diabetes without insulin. A list of low glycemic foods should be next to your cookbook and near your shopping list. It’s not hard to stick to healthy foods and you will feel the difference in just a few days.
Even if you already have diabetes, get with your doctor and find a good nutritionist to work out a plan for your battle with this devastating disease. You can be a winner.
Read all that you can about diabetes and that way you will understand why each step in its treatment is necessary for control of blood sugar. It’s always easier when you know why.
Good eating and take care.
It is important to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
Hyperglycemia, high blood sugar levels can, over time, damage the blood vessels that supply blood to our vital organs. This, in turn, increases the risk of heart and kidney disease, as well as leading to vision problems and problems with your nervous system. Researchers have linked high blood sugar levels with cancer in women. Hypoglycemia, low blood sugar,
Many people with diabetes attempt to control their blood sugars naturally without the use of pharmaceutical medications. The overall goal should be to keep blood sugars within a safe range. This will help to reduce the complications that are associated with poorly controlled blood sugars.
It is very important however to work closely with your physician if you consider using any form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (also known as CAM) If you have already been started on prescription medications, this should not replace conventional medicine.
If you choose to use CAM be certain that your doctor is conversant with the different supplements that you are using.
The following is a summary of studied CAM therapies that may be of benefit in the management of diabetes. I do recommend these as complementary therapy in my practice, but do not necessarily endorse this as exclusively as a way to treat diabetes.
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID: (ALA also known as lipoic acid or thioctic acid) is an antioxidant. Antioxidants help protect the cells from damage by free radicals. ALA is unique in the way that it works. Compared to other antioxidants that may work in water such as vitamin C or fats such as vitamin E, ALA works both ways. Levels of alpha lipoic acid begin to decline with age. Because ALA may lower the blood sugars drastically, it is important to monitor blood sugars closely when on this supplement.
OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS: These are fats that are unsaturated. They are commonly called Fish oils. They are much harder to come by in our diets. They are present in small concentrations in leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts such as walnuts, flax seed, and hemp. Omega 3 fatty acids are more commonly found in fish such as Wild Alaskan salmon, sardines, tuna, and mackerel.
Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides, however they do not affect the sugar control or total cholesterol. Triglyceride levels are usually elevated in diabetes and have been found to increase the risk for heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements appear to be safe in low to moderate doses. Due to safety concerns about some species of fish contaminated by mercury and pesticides and PCB, I strongly recommend that only supplements that have been certified by NNFA or GNP be purchased. Or simply that there is certification on the product label that the supplement is free of mercury or other contaminants.
It is very important to let your doctor know that you are taking omega-3 fatty acids as they may interact with certain prescription medications and also increase your risk for bleeding during surgery.
CHROMIUM: Chromium is a trace mineral. This means that the body requires small amounts of it. It is found in small amounts in meat, whole grain products and some fruits and vegetables. Some people take chromium supplements in an attempt to control blood sugars, however to date studies have been mixed. Some studies showed a benefit whilst others did not. At low doses it may be of benefit, however as with any other supplements, it may lower blood sugars too low. In high does, chromium can lead to kidney problems.
POLPYPHENOLS: These are antioxidants that are found in tea and also dark chocolate. They may have positive effects on the circulation and also blood pressure. A polyphenol called EGCG that is found in green tea that has been found to protect against heart disease. Studies performed by the national center for complementary and alternative medicine have not confirmed this to be of benefit in diabetics. However, there were no bad side effects noted in the study. Overall green tea in moderate amounts has been found to safe in adults.
CINNAMON: Cinnamon has also been researched as possibly lowering blood sugar levels.Cinnamon may have an insulin-like effect. The most often-cited scientific study on the effects of cinnamon and diabetes was published in the journal Diabetes Care in 2003. Individuals in the cinnamon group were noted to have reductions in their glucose by up to 29% and this was found to last up to 40 days after they had stopped taking cinnamon. They also found a change in the cholesterol and also the triglyceride levels which was an additional benefit. The down side is that this effect was not replicated in another study carried out in Germany. There are also some concerns that some forms of cinnamon may contain a compound called coumarin that is a blood thinner and interfere with the ability of the body to clot.
Other noteworthy supplements that have been studied for diabetes related benefits are as follows:
Garlic for lowering blood glucose, benefits have not been consistent.
Magnesium as a supplement for control of blood sugars received mixed results. Researchers did find that a diet rich in magnesium lowered the risk of developing diabetes. Magnesium is found in whole grain and vegetables such as spinach, plantains, black beans and also tofu. In addition it is also found in fish such as rockfish, scallops and halibut. There have been conflicting findings about coenzymeQ10 in sugar control.
There are ongoing studies on the benefits of ginseng and another trace mineral called vanadium and their effects on glucose control.
Finally other botanicals have been tried such as bitter melon, prickly pear cactus, gurmar, coccinia indica, aloe vera and fenugreek.
According to the national institute for complementary and alternative medicine there are no conclusive studies documenting any of these to be of benefit.
Here are some precautions to take if you are diabetic and considering adding a supplement to your regimen: If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant do not use a dietary supplement. Discuss all supplements that you are taking with your doctor so that (s)he can get a full picture of all the medications that you are taking. Do not replace your prescription medications with alternative medicines.
Be aware that the supplement industry is largely an unregulated field and that what is written on the supplement bottle may not accurately reflect it’s contents. I particularly recommend that my patients purchase their supplements from a reputable source and that the supplement be NNFA (National Nutritional Foods Association) or GMP (which means Good manufacturing Practice)certified which means that the facility that is manufacturing the supplement has undergone a voluntary independent inspection of it’s facility and also products and has met industry standards.
For more information about current CAM therapies I recommend that you log onto the national complementary and alternative therapy website.
This is an excerpt from Dr Nsima-Obot’s upcoming book titled ‘The ABCs of living well with Diabetes’ due for release at the end of 2009
Diabetes is a big health concern. There are many people around us who are suffering from diabetes as well as many other complications linked with it. Early diagnosis of this condition enables the diabetics to stay away from many serious ailments. The earlier the diabetes is diagnosed the easier it is for the sufferer to control the condition. This also prevents or delays the risk of onset of other chronic health related complications.
Diabetes is an illness in which the pancreas of the person does not function as it should be in the normal conditions. The level of glucose in the blood of the person starts to deviate from the range. An ideal blood sugar level reading must be below 110mg/dL and it should be less that 140 mg/dL 2 hours after meals. Simple blood tests are required for the diagnosis of diabetes. Once the illness is diagnosed the person has to work with his doctor so he can give the patient a treatment plan. Treatment plan for diabetics include pills, diet change and injections. The weight, age, family history and ethnicity put the person at an increased risk of developing the diabetic condition. There are three different types of disease. The first starts in childhood, the second in adulthood and the third in pregnancy. All the three types of diabetes are harmful for the body especially if they are not properly taken care off.
Long term complications of diabetes arise when the patient fails to monitor his blood sugar levels and these levels remain elevated for a longer period pf time. This is the reason that early detection is important and strongly recommended. Increased blood sugar levels put damaging effect on the body. Some common diabetic complications that arise because of the uncontrolled diabetes are
Kidney damage Vision problems Cardiovascular disease Nerve damage Circulation Problem
The diabetics are at an increased risk of developing these complication but the patient of diabetes that are not treating their disease properly are at an increased risk of developing this diabetic condition.
Let me put n your face that diabetes is an illness that does not have any cure. Early diagnosis and right treatment are the only things that can help the diabetics. The diabetics live a happy and healthier life like non diabetic they only have to take the control of the level of sugar in the blood in their own hands. Proper control ensures the prevention of chronic diabetic complications.
When you think of cinnamon don’t you think of spiced cider, a topping for hot chocolate, and a great baking ingredient? Cinnamon is all of those things, but it’s also an incredible substance that is a natural holistic source of health benefits. The kudos for cinnamon are many.
Did you know that cinnamon actually kills food-borne microbes like E-Coli? According to Phytotherapy Research (November 13, 1999) in laboratory tests, cinnamon proved to be a potent neutralizer of microbes, particularly of common food-borne microbes such as Escherichia coli (E. coli). How can you use it as a “Mr. Clean” for your food? Since cinnamon is a natural holistic spice, all you have to do is add it to your food. With whole foods you don’t have the same worries about dosage as you do with synthetic or inorganic products. Sprinkle cinnamon into your salads, mix it into ground beef or add it to vegetable curries to get all the benefits of cinnamon.
But research shows that cinnamon does even more. According to a study done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Maryland, cinnamon defends against cancer by reduced the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells. One study even found that sniffing cinnamon can boost cognitive and memory functions. The benefits of cinnamon are pretty amazing, especially because most people consider it an “extra spice” to add to drinks and food.
I add a dash to cinnamon to my coffee every morning because some studies show that cinnamon can regulate blood sugar. I have noticed a definite improvement in my blood sugar levels (verified by my doctor and lab tests) just by adding cinnamon, a natural holistic whole food, to my coffee. Sometimes nature provides the best medicine for our ills in the form of whole foods.
We all know that diabetes is all about having too much glucose in the blood. If you are diabetic, I believe your primary concerned is the levels of sugar in your blood. You need to reduce the blood sugar levels in order to reduce the risk of developing more complications and also to improve your general health.
It is very common and effective to reduce the amount of carbohydrates in your daily meals to help to reduce the sugar levels in your blood but by adding two more types of foods to your diet will help to stabilize and normalize the levels of sugar in your blood as well as your blood pressure.
Type 2 diabetes, at first glance appears to be a simple condition. Simply too much sugar in your bloodstream… but that actually creates an avalanche of problems in your body if you continue to have poor regulation of your blood sugar levels.
Blood sugar levels can be helped with natural products… here are just a few of the hundreds of herbs that can help you regulate your blood sugar levels:
1. Stevia: Stevia is extracted from the leaves of a plant called Stevia rebaudiana and this herb not only lowers blood sugar levels; it even tastes great. The sweetness in Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar.
For diabetics, Stevia is a great way to sweeten foods while accomplishing health goals.
Although Stevia is safe and has been widely used around the world since 1931, it usually can only be found in Health Food Stores.
2. Gymnema sylvestre: If you have a taste for chocolate… the type of taste that drives you to finish every bit of the entire pound of chocolate, then Gymnema is the herb for you. If you eat a bite of chocolate, then follow that mouthful with Gymnema sylvestre, the desire to continue eating the chocolate will automatically stop. You will not finish eating the pound of chocolate.
Gymnema sylvestre blocks the taste of sugar in your mouth… using gymnema tea with any of those sugary snacks will reduce the amount of sugar you crave.
Extracts or capsules of Gymnema can lower your blood sugar levels and your glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test results as well.
3. Cinnamon: Not only does cinnamon lower your blood sugar levels, it also lowers cholesterol levels. You will need at least half a teaspoon if you are using cinnamon direct from your spice jar, but the extract works a lot more effectively.
When researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture, (USDA) investigated the effects of several spices reported to improve diabetes, they found: cinnamon, cloves, tumeric and bay leaves actually had a measurable impact on making insulin more effective in the diabetic’s body. But of all these herbs, cinnamon is the most effective.
4. American Ginseng: Ginseng is one of the world’s oldest herbs, used by many cultures over the past 5,000 years. About 2 to 3 grams of the herb can be taken daily, and the best time to take it is 40 minutes prior to a meal or actually with your meal.
5. Bitter Melon: With a name like bitter melon, you know the taste is not going to be that great! It is really a good thing that it comes in capsules. Bitter melon has three medicinal constituents that lower blood sugar levels: charantin, Polypeptide P, and gurmarin. Gurmarin is very similar to bovine insulin in chemical structure.
The juice and extracts of this bitter fruit have been shown in clinical trials to lower blood sugar levels in many patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
The above is just touching on some of the best known and studied of the hundreds of herbs that benefit people with type 2 diabetes.
