Many people suffer from an uncomfortable and embarrassing condition called hemorrhoids. Many of them suffer in silence because they do not realize that hemorrhoids are actually very common and affects up to half of the population at one time or another. Hemorrhoids are uncomfortable and even painful, but they are rarely serious and can usually be treated with a change in diet, over the counter medication, or in some rare case surgery.

Hemorrhoids are a swelling of the veins in and around the anus that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding. Hemorrhoids can occur outside the anus and appear as a small sac or lump that will bleed and be painful. More commonly hemorrhoids occur inside the anus and do not cause much discomfort; rather they just produce blood in on the stool and on toilet paper after wiping. Sometimes hemorrhoids that develop internally can end up protruding from the anus. Sometimes they can easily be pushed back in and will heal on their own but sometimes surgery is required to remove them. Hemorrhoids are caused by frequent straining during bowel movements and hard stools which is usually caused by a lack of fiber and all around balance in the diet. Cutting back on refined and processed foods in favor of fruits and vegetables that contain fiber is the best way to produce softer stools.

Hemorrhoids are not usually serious although their symptoms can be a bit startling and very uncomfortable. Most commonly the symptoms of hemorrhoids include blood on the stool, blood on the toilet paper, itching of the anus, swelling of the anus, pain in the anus, and pain during bowel movements. These symptoms rarely become more than any annoyance, but when they do some more serious symptoms can occur.

Serious complications of hemorrhoids include gastrointestinal bleeding that can lead to anemia and thrombosis. Gastrointestinal bleeding is one of the more serious complications of hemorrhoids and can present with blood in the stool or blood in vomit. Uncontrolled bleeding like this can lead to anemia which will cause a person to become weak and fatigued. It can also cause thrombosis which is a clot located in the damaged vein which can block the vein and even lead to a heart attack. For people with severe hemorrhoids stomach ulcers are frequently present as well as they also manifest from stomach and bowel damage. Internal hemorrhoids are more likely to cause these types of complications although external hemorrhoids are more likely to require some type of surgery to remove.

While the serious complication of hemorrhoids are not something to be taken lightly, the majority of people with hemorrhoids will only experience the less severe albeit annoying symptoms of bleeding, pain, and discomfort. Most cases of hemorrhoids will heal on their own, especially if the sufferer alters their diet to include more fiber to create softer stools. There is also over the counter medication that will help to clear up hemorrhoids. Only the severest cases of hemorrhoids require doctor intervention. Sometimes internal hemorrhoids can cause more serious problems or external hemorrhoids require removal through surgery.

Aplastic anemia is composed of a group of conditions that are joined together, with every one of them having a counterproductive on the bone marrow and the blood cells. The more serious cases of aplastic anemia would necessitate a cord blood transplant or a bone marrow transplant just to improve a the chances of a patient surviving the ordeal. Meanwhile, different modes of treatment such as medications and chemotherapy can prevent the development of this in less serious cases.

An aplastic anemia patient experiences an inefficient production of his body’s white blood cells and red blood cells. Platelets are needed by the body for effective blood clotting, red blood cells assist in transporting oxygen throughout the body and white blood cells help in fighting infection. A person suffering from severe aplastic anemia would not have these cells functioning in the proper way, thus endangering the whole body’s health and well-being.

Factors Affecting the Outcome of Transplants

Studies show that children have a greater chance of survival compared to adults who are suffering from severe aplastic anemia. Experts think that the reason behind this is that children and young adults tend to have lower risks of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) progression, and they have better responses to transplants. GVHD can develop in patients suffering from severe aplastic anemia, and is a grave complication arising from the transplant; it can often be life-threatening.

A huge number of successful transplant patients are those who have their siblings as donors. This rate of success can be attributed to the fact that the closer the donor is to the recipient, the better the chances of success will be.

In the event that the transplants go awry with those suffering from a version of severe aplastic anemia, there might be a number of factors involved. As an example, the time lapsed between the time the patient was diagnosed and when the treatment will be done can have a significant effect; the longer the waiting period between the diagnosis and the transplant, the lower the chances are of the patient surviving, because the illness was allowed to push through with its progress.

Severe Aplastic Anemia Study Results

A number of research studies have been done to study the effects and causes of severe aplastic anemia, and further studies are being continually done to search for more substantial treatments for the illness.

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disease that primarily affects the small and large intestine, but can be present in other parts of the digestive tract. The disease was named after an American gastroenterologist, Burrill Crohn, who was the first to describe the disease.

Crohn’s disease usually affects people in their teens or twenties, but there are cases where patients are struck with the disease later in life. The symptoms and severity of the disease vary from person to person.

At present, there are no medications that can cure Crohn’s disease. Most patients experience periods of relapse followed by periods of remission that can last months or even years. During remissions the symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding are lessened. The improvements in symptoms are usually brought about by prescription medications or surgery. There are cases, where without treatment, the Crohn’s goes into remission. No one knows why.

The goals of treatment are to bring about a remission, maintain it, minimize side effects from medications, and help to improve the overall quality of life of the patient. The medications for treating Crohn’s disease include anti-inflammatory agents such as the 5ASA compounds, corticosteroids, topical antibiotics and immuno-modulators.

Crohn’s Disease Medications

Crohn’s disease medications include anti-inflammatory drugs that are intended to decrease intestinal inflammation; the way arthritis medications reduce joint inflammation. The different types of anti-inflammatory medications used to treat Crohn’s disease are:

1. 5-ASA compounds such as sulfasalazine (Azulfidine) and mesalamine (Pentasa, Asacol, Dipentum, Colazal, Rowana enema, Canasa suppository) are used directly on the inflamed tissue.

Sulfasalazine is a prodrug that isn’t active in its ingested form. It is usually broken down by bacteria in the colon to create two byproducts –5aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and sulfapyridine. No one is sure which of these byproducts is responsible for the activity of azulfidine. The 5-ASA is known for its therapeutic benefit, though it’s not clear whether sulfapyridine offers any additional benefit.

5 aminosalicylic acid and sulfapyridine work as anti-inflammatory agents that treat the inflammation in the colon. The effectiveness is believed to be due to the local effect on the bowel, however there are also some beneficial systemic immune suppressant effects as well.

But like any medications 5-ASA is not without side effects. Some of the side effects are very frequent gastrointestinal disturbances. Nausea, vomiting, gastric distress and anorexia occur in about one out of every three patients. Likewise dizziness may also occur during but should be of little concern unless it becomes persistent.

There are also some less common side effects such as a drop in white blood cell counts or a type of anemia that happens more often in patients with arthritis. The chance of developing these side effects is about 6 out of every 10,000 patients. Some other rare, but possible side effects include fever, pale skin, sore throat, fatigue and unusual bleeding or bruising. If you experience any of these, you will likely be taken off the medication.

Additional side effects include headache, allergic reactions and photosensitivity. These side effects require medical attention since allergic reactions can cause difficulty swallowing, blistering, peeling, loosening of the skin, aching joints and muscles as well as unusual tiredness or weakness.

2. Corticosteroids act systematically without requiring direct contact with the inflamed tissue. These medications are used to decrease inflammation throughout the body. These drugs also have important, and dangerous side effects, if taken for long periods. You doctor can advise you best on this.

There are new classes of topical corticosteroids that are applied directly to the inflamed tissue. These new drugs have much fewer side effects compared to systematic corticosteroids.

3. Antibiotics such as metronidazole (Flagyl) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro). These medications decrease inflammation by unknown mechanisms.

Metronidazole is effective in killing anaerobic bacteria as well as certain parasites. Anaerobic bacteria is single a cell organism that lives in low oxygen environments, and causes disease in the abdomen, liver and pelvis. In terms of parasites, giardia lamblia and ameba are parasites that cause abdominal pain and severe diarrhea in most patients. The metronidazole blocks some of the cell functions of these parasites resulting in their demise.

Serious side effects of metronidazole are rare, but include seizures and damage to nerves that brings numbness as well as tingling in the extremities. If you have these side effects, contact your doctor at once, you’ll need to stop taking this medication.

If you suspect you have Crohn’s disease, you should first consult your primary care physician before taking other steps. Careful diagnosis and monitoring are the key to living comfortably with Crohn’s.

So you went to your doctor for a routine exam, he or she noticed a small bump on your private areas – and suggested a blood test to rule out the herpes simplex virus. You may have noticed the bump but thought nothing of it. Perhaps it looked like a shaving bump, or a bug bite – whatever the case is…genital herpes was the very last thing on your mind. You leave the doctors office, nervous – but sure that you couldn’t possibly have that disease. A few days later you receive a call from your doctor who nonchalantly tells you that your test results were positive for the herpes virus. She offers to give you a prescription for suppressive treatments and reminds you to come back in one year.

Blood tests

Complete blood count

This test screens for anemia, which is very common during pregnancy. Anemia may be due to low iron levels, or can be an inherited form, such as thalassemia.

Blood type

This test will determine your blood type

as well as show if you are Rhesus positive (Rh+) or negative (Rh-). If you are Rh- you will usually receive a medication called rhogam after medical procedures such as amniocentesis, or if you have vaginal bleeding. You will usually get an extra dose at around 28 weeks.

Antibody screen

This test determines whether you have antibodies that could cross the placenta and cause the baby to become anemic.

Hepatitis B

This test will identify women who are actively infectious with hepatitis B, a viral liver disease that can be transmitted to the baby during pregnancy and labor.

HIV

This test will identify women who have been infected with the HIV retrovirus.

Rubella

This blood test determines whether you are immune to rubella. If you are not, you will usually get vaccinated right after delivery. You cannot have the vaccine during pregnancy.

Syphilis

Syphilis does not always cause symptoms but can cause serious problems for the fetus.

Urine test

This test looks for extra sugar or protein in your urine, and for signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Extra protein can be a sign of kidney disease extra sugar may indicate diabetes. UTls will be treated with antibiotics to prevent a serious kidney infection, which can cause pregnancy complications.

Cervical smear

Unless you have had one recently, you may have a cervical smear (PAP smear).

Blood pressure

Blood pressure usually falls at the beginning of pregnancy. Women with high blood pressure or blood pressure at the high end of normal early in pregnancy are at increased risk of having blood pressure problems later.

Weight

This baseline value will let your care provider calculate how much weight you have gained as your pregnancy progresses, and guide how much weight you need to gain during the pregnancy.

If your are uncertain as to whether you have had chicken pox, a blood test will let you know whether you should stay away from people with this infectious disease while you are pregnant. If you are not immune, and do happen to be exposed, there is treatment to prevent severe chicken pox during pregnancy. If you are African American, Hispanic, or of mediterranean , descent you will have tests for blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia or thalassemia, which are more common in these groups.

Last but not least, you will be given your due date at this appointment (some times called the EDC – estimated date of confinement). Your due date is based on your last menstrual period. Even if you think you know the date you conceived, your last menstrual period is usually the most accurate way to estimate your due date. The exception occurs when you don’t remember when your last period was or if you have very irregular periods. In this case, an early ultrasound will be the most accurate way to date your pregnancy. Don’t get too attached to your due date remember, it is only an estimate.

Usually your care provider will see you again in 4-6 weeks to review your test results and discuss first trimester screening results. However, your doctor should call you before your second visit if any of the results are abnormal.

It is understood by all that the beautiful lush and perfectly manicured golf course greens are kept that way by the use of chemicals, lots and lots of chemicals for that matter. Which chemicals to use are up to golf courses and can be different state to state. The East coast by far has the highest percentage of pesticide use.

In a study done by the EPA in 1982 showed that 9 pounds per acre per year of chemicals were used on a New York golf course. Reports have shown chemical use as low as 500 pounds of chemicals used per year and as high as 1500 to 2300 pounds of chemicals per year. That is astounding considering the fact that we balk over agriculture using less than a pound of chemicals on our food per square acre.

Here are a list of common chemicals used on golf courses and their potential health effects:

Chlorothalonil – can cause blurred vision, redness of eyes and skin, abdominal pain, burning sensation

Mecoprop – burning skin and eyes, nausea, dizziness and headaches

MSMA – toxic hepatitis

Ipodione – unknown at this time

Thiram – toxic to the nervous system

Diazinon – affects red blood cells, inhibits brain function and the nervous system

Benomylcauses – low birth weight

Benfluralin – decreases red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration

Chlorpyrifos – impairs nervous system function

Dicamba – toxic to a fetus

Diquat – causes cataracts

Disulfoton – impairs nervous system function and causes optic nerve degeneration

Pendamenthalin – is toxic to the liver

Propoxur – impairs nervous system function

Thiophante-menthyl – decreases sperm formation and can cause hypothyroidism

Triadimefon – decreases red blood cell count

Parraffin oil – unknown at this time

Pentachlorophenol – damages the liver, thyroid and immune system, can cause high fevers and difficulty breathing

EDB – cancer, nerve damage and sterility in humans

DCPA – increases the weight of kidneys (in men), increases weight of adrenal glands (in women), excessive growth of thyroid, abnormalities of the liver

Maneb – cough, sore throat, redness and pain

and a host of other chemicals.

With golf courses not being required to tell you when they are spraying, you can unwittingly be walking on and inhaling these chemicals. There have been many deaths to wild life near golf courses including one of the worst at a New York golf course where some fairways had just been treated with diazinon. A large number of Geese came down to feed and over a three day period a total of 545 geese had perished.

Bottom line is this, it is known that these chemicals affect our health, but there are steps we can take to be a lot more effective in reducing the dangers of any over exposure one might encounter.

When you want to play golf, find out when they are going to spray chemicals and avoid playing for a couple of days afterwards to reduce exposure.

Eat healthy! There are foods that help to detox the body such as fruit, salad greens, sprouts, all vegetables (except asparagus, sauerkraut, chick peas and brussel sprouts), good fats such as olive or flaxseed oil and herbal teas.

Ionic foot baths are great for detoxing and generally feeling better. Many health practitioners, spas and salons are offering this service. Some people buy their own units for ease of use at home for themselves and their families.

Studies on ionic foot baths show that an overall balancing effect and a significant increase in the number of negative ions can assist one in detoxing the body. The ionic technique of cleansing thru feet provides a body purge of all vital organs, resulting in improved health.

Also, sweating in a sauna or hot bath helps to detox.

Various herbs and juices can also assist in cleansing the body of toxins. Check your local health food store or naturopath for advice.

If you love golf and want to play, you can reduce the harmful effects of the chemicals they use and just enjoy yourself!

Genital herpes is a disease that can be easily transmitted through sexual contact. What it makes the risk of spreading the infection higher is the fact that most people who already have it do not notice symptoms at all. In some cases, symptoms do appear but then these do not give any pain or discomfort that a person infected with it will still not recognize that he or she already has the herpes simplex virus or the HSV. Therefore, this person may just continue to perform sex without any precaution, infecting others instead with the virus. The HSV can be transmitted also through oral sex.

Because of the absence of any telltale signs, an HSV virus carrier may not find it necessary to undergo STD testing. Usually, the need for medical check-up is felt only when blisters appear in the area of the genitalia. However, some will even wait for the more telling signs of infection such as fever, vaginal discharges, and cold sores to occur before ever considering of seeing a doctor. This is certainly unfortunate because this means that the difficulty in controlling the spread of the HSV is can be attributed to the negligence or ignorance of the very carrier themselves. Definitely, this can put to harm the people that they care for most, including their kids.

There are certain ways of testing a person possibly infected with the herpes virus. The very basic among these is to find out the existence of blisters. A doctor may examine a patient if she has this basic symptom. However, there are cases when blisters cannot be found, especially if the testing was done when during the early stage of the infection. If so, the patient may be sent to a genitourinary clinic for further examinations. There, she may be made to undergo blood and urine tests. The samples taken will be analyzed to find out any HSV infection. Doctors think that this may not be a very effective STD testing method though. They said that this has a rate of accuracy of a little above 80% only.

The existence of blisters near the sexual organ does not immediately prove herpes infection, although it does make the possibility much higher. Doctors examining the patient may need to take a sample of it too. They usually swab a sample and then study it through the aid of a microscope. This is definitely the more effective way of testing for genital herpes.

It is imperative for sexually active people to learn about genital herpes and its symptoms. By being informed about the disease, they can be more aware of any signs of the infection. Those who can already sense the infection by themselves usually undergo STD testing.

One of the most commonly asked questions when it regards feeding your baby is, “What is the magic of yogurt and cheese that makes it OK to give to my baby before 1 year old? My pediatrician said not to feed my baby dairy prior to the age of 1 year old!”

The truth is, there is no great magic in yogurt or cheese. It is unfortunate that many medical professionals neglect to properly explain why it is fine to offer your baby cheese and/or yogurt earlier than the age of one year old. The most common reasons for it being allowed prior to age 1 year old are:

Unlike Whole Cow Milk beverage, your baby is not at risk of breast milk and/or formula being replaced by yogurt or cheese. The medical community worries that if whole cow milk is introduced to an infant prior to 1 year old, that parents would stop formula and/or breastfeeding and use milk as the replacement. This would be dangerous to your baby’s health!

If there is any “magic”, it is that yogurt and cheese do have the advantage of lactose being broken down. As lactose is already broken down with the culturing of the yogurt or cheese, it is typically easier to digest. Many people with lactose intolerance are often be able to eat cheese and/or yogurt without trouble. The same is true for some people with a milk protein (either to the casein or the whey) allergy.

Why is Milk not recommended before age 12 months?

The medical community believes that many people would stop formula feeding and/or breastfeeding and start their kids on whole cow milk earlier than 1 year old, unless they were told not to. This is typically why pediatricians and nutritionists say that other milk products such as cottage cheese, cheeses and yogurt are fine.

Milk does not contain enough nutrients, vitamins or minerals for it to adequately and properly sustain an infant’s growth. Indeed, prior to 1 year old, the consumption of a large amount of dairy products may put baby at risk for iron deficient anemia. The most dramatic effects of whole cow milk are on iron levels in the body. Infants fed breast milk or iron fortified formula have normal iron levels. Milk impedes the proper absorption of iron. Iron intake is one thing that an infant can not afford to have cut down or cut out of the diet.

Additionally, whole cow’s milk protein and fat are more difficult for an infant to digest and absorb. “Infants fed whole cow’s milk receive inadequate amounts of Vitamin E, iron, essential fatty acids, and excessive amounts of protein, sodium, and potassium. These levels may be too high for the infant’s system to handle.” mercksource health

When will I be able to offer my baby yogurt or cheese?

Cheese is typically recommended at an age when your baby is able to mash foods with his or her gums or between 7-8 months old. Melted cheese makes a wonderful edition to a finger food meal of veggies and meats! As regards the introduction of yogurt, most pediatricians recommend starting your infant on yogurt around 7-8 months of age. Some pediatricians also recommend yogurt as a great first food (from 6 months+). Selecting a whole milk yogurt is the most beneficial to your infant as babies need fats in their diets for proper growth! You can buy plain whole milk yogurts made by such companies as Stonyfield Farm, Cascade Fresh and Brown Cow. You can also Make Your Own Homemade Yogurt! Stonyfield Farm makes the YoBaby brand that many parents know and love! However, using a large container of Plain Whole Milk yogurt will save you money (and save on added sugar) and give you the flexibility of adding your own flavorings to baby’s yogurt.

The above information applies to those who do not have a known milk allergy or a lactose intolerance, or a familial history of same. As always, you should thoroughly discuss the introduction of foods with your baby’s personal pediatrician!

If your doctor believes that you are suffering from the blood disorder known as iron deficiency anemia, it is likely that a “Total Iron Binding Capacity” or “TIBC” test will be ordered. This test is really easy to understand. It simply takes a measurement of the iron that is located in the blood.

The medical professional that interprets the test will be able to determine if there is an excess of iron within the blood, or if there is a lower than normal amount of iron in the blood. This is made possible by the fact that when iron is transported within the blood, it attaches to a special protein referred to as “Transferrin”. The test works to discover the measurement of this protein.

Preparation

If you are ordered to take the “Total Iron Binding Capacity” test for iron deficiency anemia, it is important to ensure that you know and understand how to effectively prepare for it. You should understand that, because this is a blood test, the blood will be drawn from one of the veins in your body.

An antiseptic is used to clean the injection spot – which is typically from the inside of the area of the elbow or perhaps on the hand. Then, an elastic form of a band will be tied on the area of the upper arm so that the vein swells and becomes visible. The blood is then collected into a vial where it can be sealed and sent for testing.

Test Results

If the test comes back abnormally and there is a high amount of iron in the blood, it typically means that you have iron deficiency anemia. It could also mean that you are in the late stages of pregnancy too. If the test results in low iron levels, it may mean that there is an issue with the liver, you are experiencing a type of malnutrition, you may have Hemolytic Anemia, pernicious anemia, or Sickle Cell Anemia.

Your medical doctor will be able to determine an appropriate course of action if you have Iron Deficiency Anemia, or any other condition that the “Total Iron Binding Capacity” test reveals.
