Having a cyst on ovary produces very vague signs of illness or problems, unless of course you are fortunate (?) enough to have the stabbing pain in your abdomen or pelvis, (ovary pain) which can sometimes be a meaningful sign that it is time to give your gynecologist a call and schedule a pelvic examination. Unfortunately, pain or pressure in your lower stomach area is one of the early symptoms of ovarian cancer, as well.

Does an ovarian cyst naturally mean you have ovarian cancer? No…absolutely not. Could the cyst actually be malignant…in other words…cancer of the ovaries? Regrettably, yes! Ovarian cyst symptoms need to be treated very seriously, even though the majority of them are nothing to be concerned about. Cysts that do not ever become cancer are functional cysts, and occur many times without any symptoms at all.

A type of cyst on ovary that can be cancerous is a dermoid cyst, but only one to two percent actually are malignant. Cysts on ovaries in fact can be one of the ONLY early symptoms of ovarian cancer that is not a vague, generic sign.

So, what are some of the early symptoms of ovarian cancer, or for that matter…a cyst on ovary?

- pain in the lower abdomen
- irregular menstrual periods/bleeding in between periods
- bloating, or pressure in the abdomen
- difficulty breathing
- gastrointestinal problems…nausea, change in bowel habits, indigestion
- back pain
- feeling full quickly/not hungry
- unexplained weight gain/weight loss
- fatigue
- fever
- urinary problems

Ovarian cancer produces many obscure symptoms that might manifest and can very easily be misinterpreted for a more common illness. There have been studies done though, that have indicated that having MORE than one of these symptoms for a prolonged period…four or five weeks…is definitely a reason to see your doctor.

Because there really are no telltale early symptoms of ovarian cancer, other than some of the above signs…a woman must pay close attention to what she is experiencing. If there is any suspicion whatsoever that a cyst on ovary is present and that the patient feels her doctor is not doing enough, the best solution is to…get a second opinion. It is your life…take charge of it!

If you are an asthma sufferer, chances are you fear the onset of another attack. After experiencing your first of many attacks, you start wondering if it is possible to cure asthma. Unfortunately, until today, scientists have not yet established if it is possible to cure the said disease.

Asthma is basically an inflammation of the air passages. Once your air passages start to constrict, you will experience the different symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, chest pain and tightness. Asthma treatment is focused upon resolving the inflammation of the air passages. Anti-asthma medications cannot cure asthma because these simply prevent an attack from occurring and exacerbation of symptoms. The said medications are for prevention and control, not cure.

Some people say that certain herbs are possible to cure the said disease. These herbs like angelica, anise, and turmeric are like anti-asthma medications. These address the inflammation and symptoms. These remove the symptoms but not permanently. This is the reason why an herb is not a possible cure to asthma.

Is breathing treatment possible to cure asthma? There are many different breathing exercises used. Examples of these are the Pranayama breathing exercises and Buteyko method. Unfortunately, any of the breathing exercises is not possible to cure asthma. Like herbs and anti-asthma medications, breathing exercises are for control and prevention. Even if you do breathing exercises everyday, you are still at risk of experiencing an attack when you are exposed to an asthma trigger.

These natural ways to treat the said disease are effective although not one of them is possible to cure asthma. The incidence of an attack is lowered if breathing exercises are used in conjunction with anti-asthma medications. Even the use of anti-asthma medications is reduced if these natural remedies are used. But, doctors warn against using breathing exercises and herbs in place of anti-asthma medications. Since anti-asthma medications have sufficient data that establish their safety and effectiveness, asthma sufferers are advised never to stop taking these medications as prescribed.

Once you have asthma, you cannot completely get rid of the symptoms through any form of treatment. This is because once you get exposed to the trigger, you will definitely experience an attack. Therefore, the only way to get rid of the symptoms is by completely avoiding exposure to the trigger.

It is really unfortunate that like cancer, there is no cure for the said disease yet. To date, the only promising possible cure is complete non-exposure to the trigger. No asthma sufferer has done this so far. If you cannot guarantee complete non-exposure to the trigger, you always have to bring your anti-asthma medications with you in case of an asthma attack.

Allergic Rhinitis is the combination of symptoms caused by a reaction to allergens such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold. When an individual suffers allergic rhinitis due to pollen from certain trees, grass, or plants, this condition is typically called “Hay Fever”.

Most cases of hay fever are typically described as seasonal allergies because they are triggered during different seasons of the year when certain plants are in the pollination process. In individuals with severe allergies to pollen, it can greatly restrict certain activities including missing work and school.

Some of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis due to hay fever are itchy watery eyes, nasal congestion, sneezing, post nasal drip, and headache due to sinus pressure. These allergies can manifest themselves at an early age but in some cases they may not be present until later on in life.

The instances of a flare up due to seasonal allergies can be reduced if the individual knows what type of pollen they are allergic to and can remain indoors with their windows closed and air conditioning or some type of air filtration system when these pollen levels are at their highest.

In some cases where hay fever is frequent and severe, testing can be done such as a skin or blood test to determine the specific allergens causing the reaction which can be very beneficial in knowing what to avoid. In cases of occasional short term allergic rhinitis due to seasonal allergies the symptoms can be treated with over the counter medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and saline nasal sprays.

In frequent or more severe cases your physician can prescribe stronger medications including allergy shots which can increase the tolerance to the allergens that trigger the symptoms and are generally given to those patients who experience severe allergic rhinitis with a frequency of more than three months out of the year.

Drug addiction is serious business. There is more to it than what anybody will share in an interview, book or in a movie. The fact is that drug abuse has become so prevalent in today’s society that most of us are able to spot someone suffering from a drug addiction and then shrug it off as if we hadn’t seen anything at all. Perhaps this is why so many addicts suffer without seeking help. It’s easy to think that your own community is insulated from things like drug abuse. The truth is that even the most picture perfect town has people living within its borders who are addicted to drugs.

In Delray Beach, Florida, there are many drug treatment centers that are available to those who are struggling with addictions to drugs and alcohol. These drug rehab programs can include both inpatient drug rehabilitation programs and outpatient drug rehabilitation services. They typically range from thirty days to ninety days depending on the depth of individuals struggles. Some alcohol and drug addiction recovery programs offer a faith-based treatment program to those clients who prefer to work the twelve steps and study scriptures in a safe and secure environment.

There are some who will scoff and say that the drug problems of the United States are exaggerated and that the problems people see on television or in the newspaper are trumped up to gain the attention of the viewer/reader. It might surprise you then to read some of the following statistics that were provided to us by the White House’s drug policy website.

In 2001 almost thirty percent of kids between the ages of twelve and seventeen reported using drugs.

That same year more than half of respondents between the ages of eighteen and twenty five reported recent drug use.

In a study done by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the following drug statistics were discovered:

In 2004 More than nineteen million Americans over the age of twelve were currently using drugs-including harder and illicit drugs.

There were more than sixteen million adult Americans (over the age of eighteen) using illicit drugs.

In 2004, almost twenty three million Americans had dependency problems with drugs. About an eighth of these abused alcohol and drugs and half of the total number of users abused alcohol but did not have abuse problems with illicit drugs.

Finally, consider the following statistics from the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health done by the Office of Applied Studies at the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

In 2007 almost twenty percent of adults over eighteen that were polled admitted to using illicit drugs within a month of the poll taking place. Marijuana was the second highest drug used in this poll and came in at just over sixteen percent of users polled.

This same survey found that males were more likely to abuse illicit drugs and marijuana while all other drugs were about even with both genders.

Because drug abuse is so common in our society the staff and experts many of the drug rehabs will not be surprised or shocked when you place your first call to begin your drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation treatments. Instead you will find an environment that welcomes clients who want to get sober and will be surrounded by people who are in the same boat as you are. The trained staff members in drug rehabs understand that drug use is not this shadowy “thing” that “other people” do. Drug use can affect anybody, no matter what age he or she might be.

Statistically speaking, most adult Americans have tried some type of drug at least once or twice in their lives. The residents of Delray Beach are no different from the rest of the country. This is why it is important for drug addicts to realize that there is no shame in seeking help. The statistics regarding teenage and young adult drug use are startling so if you think that you or someone that you care about might have a drug or alcohol addiction problem, you should make an appointment at a drug and alcohol treatment center. The experts there can help explain that drug use isn’t anything to be ashamed of and that it can be overcome.

The 12 Steps as used by Alcoholics anonymous (AA) Narcotics anonymous (NA) Al-anon Cocaine anonymous (CA) Gamblers anonymous (GA) Emotions anonymous (EA) Sex and Love addicts (SALA) anonymous Co dependents anonymous (CODA). The twelve steps recovery program saved my life and brought some peace of mind into my life. As I write this I have been involved in 3 twelve step recovery fellowships and have been a member of alcoholics anonymous for 33 years. I have learnt a lot in that time from my sponsor and other wise people from all walks of life. I have taken “a bit of this and bit of that” from many sources of wisdom.

I want to share with you how my sponsor suggested how I do the twelve steps. When you look at the steps only one word changed. The “requirement for membership”. The rest of the steps are about building character (emotional muscle), getting rid of guilt, fear and resentment, making amends, and being able to look the world in the eye “to get a Teflon personality”. If you want to be “happy, joyous and free” then it is suggested you do the 12 steps in a way that takes courage. To see yourself as the problem and not the world. After doing the steps I learned that it was me not people or actions that were the problem, but my reaction. I soon learned that other people’s actions I can not do anything about!. But I can change my reactions.

If you are a person that is in an emotional turmoil then something has to change, it can’t be the past and it can’t be the future but we can change now. “The present is a result of the past and the future is a result of the present”.

Honesty, Open Mind ness, Willingness. Are a good frame of mind to be in before you start the 12 steps !

This is where we have to look at our behaviour, reactions, guilt’s, resentments, our fears. These are what rob us of our peace of mind!. Peace of mind sounds so good. Does it seem so far away?. Do you think, “Well mate, if you had my problems you would not have peace of mind either!”. Well you do have peace of mind, it is inside of you right now!. Right there, yes, right inside of you!. “No, I have not”, you may be thinking. Well it’s there!. Yes, honestly it is. But it may be covered in “dust” and that “dust” may be resentment, guilt, fear, self pity, living in the past, in the future, living in the guilty past. Blow that dust away and you have peace of mind!. In short “PRACTICE OPPOSITES”.

That is what the steps are about, learning to practice opposites. If you are unhappy now, then practice the opposite of “thinking”, “reactions”, “resentment”, “low self-esteem”, “guilt” etc. Just practice opposites and that is what The 12 steps is all about.

Millions of people around the world suffer every summer from hay fever and it can be a very annoying condition to tolerate especially when you’re trying to enjoy a beautiful summer day. It’s caused by breathing in pollen released into the air and also by pollen getting into the eyes. Not all suffers of hay fever are allergic to the same kinds of pollen however the most common come from grasses, weeds and even certain kinds of trees.

Anyone suffering from hay fever will immediately recognize the classic symptoms of sneezing, a running or blocked nose and itchy eyes. An attack can be so horrible that’s enough to stop suffers from going outside or opening windows. If you do intend on going out when the pollen count is high it’s advised you take a tablet about 30 minutes beforehand. Even so, you may still find that you suffer from your allergy and the medication can only help to reduce it.

There are numerous medicines available over the counter to treat the allergy and most are small tablets you take once a day or in eight hour periods. It’s well worth while experimenting with different ones until you find the one which works best for you and to also see your doctor as some of best hay fever medications are only available with a prescription. There are other homeopathic treatments out there however they are generally not as effective as other medicines. In truth, just the same as the common cold, modern medicine is yet to come anywhere near to a solution for hay fever.

Alcoholism and Alcohol Rehab Alcoholism is a serious disease and the problem is growing. The National Council On Alcoholism And Drug Dependence statistics reveal that approximately 18 million Americans suffer from alcohol abuse. Each year more than 100,000 Americans die from alcohol related deaths and alcohol is a factor in nearly half of all traffic fatalities. Over half of the men and women in the United States report that one or more of their family members have an alcohol abuse problem.

According to the National Institute On Alcohol Abuse And Alcoholism, alcoholism is a disease that has four main components:

. Craving – An overwhelming need to drink

. Loss of Control – An inability to put the drink down

. Physical Dependence – After a period of heavy drinking withdrawal symptoms occur
such as nausea, shaking, and anxiety

. Tolerance – Needing greater amounts of alcohol to obtain a “high” Alcohol Abuse Complications

The complications to the body from alcohol abuse may include damage to the brain and central nervous system, liver disorders, gastrointestinal problems, cardiovascular problems, diabetes complications, sexual and menstrual dysfunction, birth defects, neurological complications and increased risk of cancer.

There is no cure for alcoholism. Even if an alcoholic has long-term sobriety, he or she remains susceptible to relapse. To guard against a relapse, an alcoholic must avoid drinking alcohol. There is treatment for the disease and a chance to build a healthier lifestyle. Addiction treatment generally depends on the severity of alcoholism and alcohol abuse. It may include the following:

. Detox and withdrawal-a process of safely removing alcohol from the body
lasting from a period of days to weeks.

. Assessment and treatment for medical problems related to physical damage from the
disease

. Drug addiction treatment-some medications are used to reduce the craving for alcohol or to
produce severe physical reactions such as nausea and vomiting if one drinks while on
the medication. Drug treatment does not cure alcoholism nor will they remove the
desire to drink.

. Individual/Group Counseling-There are effective methods of counseling that help the
alcoholic to identify feelings that trigger the urge to drink and alternatives to manage
those feelings.

Checking in to a drug rehab or alcohol rehab program is an excellent method of treatment for alcohol abuse. There are many types of addiction treatment or alcohol treatment programs.Some offer alcohol detox and inpatient addiction treatment and others offer shorter-term residencies, sober living or outpatient counseling. When researching drug rehabs, ask what addiction treatment services they offer.If you are looking for an alcohol treatment program, alcohol rehab program or drug rehab program you can call 1-800-511-9225, a national alcohol treatment program helpline.

For pretty much all women, the changes in the menstruation cycles leading up to and during the time of menopause will be due to ever changing hormone levels. It is quite normal and natural to experience irregular periods for anything up to seven or eight years prior to the last period. It is also nothing un-natural for periods to be either quite a bit lighter or considerably heavier, or even longer or much shorter.

At the time when the menstrual cycle begins to fluctuate, it is a good idea to visit your doctor just to double check that this change in cycle is due to perimenopause and nothing else. It is not normal for bleeding to occur more than one year after the last period. If bleeding occurs even six months later it should arouse suspicion and you should see your doctor quickly to find out the cause.

Investigation Of Abnormal Bleeding

When you visit your doctor complaining of any of the above and you are approaching 50, he or she will want to give you a complete examination and do tests to exclude any serious causes.

Testing Methods

Your doctor will perform a vaginal examination and cervical smear, and arrange blood tests for anemia and thyroid function.

You may be referred for an ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs (a transvaginal scan or TVS). This can be done in the ultrasound department of the hospital, but more commonly you would see a gynecologist who specializes in ultrasound investigation. If the scan shows the lining of the uterus is thickened or irregular, you may have an endometrial biopsy, when a small sample of the lining is taken using a thin plastic tube. This can be carried out at the same time as the scan and takes two minutes.

Alternatively, you may need a hysteroscopy and/or a D&C (dilatation and curettage) under anesthetic. Hysteroscopy involves examining the uterine cavity with a thin fiberoptic hysteroscope. A D&C involves dilating the cervix, scraping out the lining of the uterus and sending it for further tests. This method is often used as a treatment for heavy bleeding, and sometimes solves the problem.

Either method will help diagnose any abnormality of the endometrium, including polyps, infection, endometrial hyperplasia and cancer.

A cervical smear will help to diagnose the cause of any spotting or bleeding after sex. The test involves scraping some cells from the cervix and examining them for any signs of pre-cancer or cancer. Regular cervical smears after the age of 20 will help to ensure that any abnormality will be found early and can be dealt with before it becomes serious. If the smear is abnormal, further examination of the cervix, using a colposcope to magnify the area, will be necessary. Biopsies are done of any visualized abnormalities and sent to the pathologist.

Blood tests will help to show whether the abnormal bleeding is due to hormone imbalance. There is some concern that if you are bleeding heavily due to unopposed estrogen, your risk of certain hormone-sensitive cancers is increased.

When bleeding patterns change it is important to have blood tests to check the thyroid gland. Thyroid disease can give many of the same symptoms as perimenopause, and if left untreated can cause serious illness.

Ninety-year old Sen. Robert Byrd stood on the senate floor shaking with anger, screaming an outrage felt by many Americans, as he choked with emotion, “Barbaric…Barbaric…Barbaric…” Vick Michael Vick, the celebrated Atlanta Falcon Quarterback and multi-millionaire sports celebrity, had been indicted for being involved in dogfighting.

Byrd’s words about the incident were appropriate…”Barbaric…”

When I told my wife about the episode, she nearly cried. We’re both dog lovers and don’t understand how anyone can take pleasure from hurting these or any other animals.

As the news crews latched on to the outrage, the evidence against Vick grew.

Not only was he “involved”, but he was breeding dozens of dogs on his property using “Rape Stands” – a contraption that immobilizes the female for mating because the best fighting females are so mean that they’ll bite the males.

Cajun-style dog fight pits were found on his estate in Virginia.

Barbaric…

Later that day, an e-mail notice dropped in my wife’s inbox reminding her that she had sponsored several dogs last year at Best Friends – a beautiful organization in Utah that takes in stray, injured or neglected animals.

She sponsored five more this year, each with a moving story.

Shortly, an e-card arrived in my inbox from Best Friends saying that Charlsa had sponsored “Apple Butter” in my name (because she knows I love apple butter).

I smiled, thinking about my two dogs at home: Sophie and LuAnn.

LuAnn had come to us when a friend found the frightened six-week old puppy fending for herself in a church parking lot. She became our lover dog – respectful, sweet and playful…and a glutton for attention.

After six months, reluctantly, we realized this puppy needed a playmate. The neighbor brought six-month old retriever-mixed breed Sophie by the house to play with LuAnn and, of course, they fell in love with each other running, rolling and rumbling in the front yard.

When it was time to leave, she told us that she had six dogs and Sophie was going to the animal shelter because she was more than she could handle.

That’s how she came to live with us. We didn’t really want another dog. How could we love her as much as LuAnn?

But loving each other and never biting, they played so hard and made so much noise that visitors thought they were fighting. They just knew how to have a good time.

Sophie especially loved life. In addition to playing, she loved getting on the furniture – especially when we weren’t looking – and terrorizing the cat.

When we returned home down our long drive, she and LuAnn would stop growling and playing when they saw our truck, and Sophie would search desperately for a stick. She always met an open car door by presenting a stick (or stick-like-substance) in big jaws for us, while wagging her big, bushy tail so hard that her whole body swayed with the momentum.

For three years, they were never separated. If they had to spend the night at the vet’s for shots, checkups or boarding, they slept in the same dog run because they couldn’t be apart.

Slowly, Sophie wagged her way into our hearts…like dogs tend to do.

(I’ve noticed over the years that dog lovers are just better people. It’s hard to hold anger and resentment against other humans when you love a dog. There’s something about letting the creature inside our protective wall that softens us.)

So, when a neighbor called last night to tell us that Sophie was laying on the road, we panicked fearing the worst. We flew to the road and there she lay, just below the crest of hill, all life gone from the sweet girl who loved life so much.

Our hearts exploded with the loss of a beautiful friend who knew nothing but joy.

Back to Michael Vick

The outrage is justified.

Jail time is warranted.

Suspension from the NFL a no-brainer.

But a better sentence would be working at Best Friends supporting and nurturing those animals in need of his love – any love – until he opens his heart to one of those dogs.

When that happens, a day will come when he no longer feels that soft-wet nuzzle on his arm, and his heart will ache with a pain like he’s never felt before.

Then, he’ll understand the wrongs he’s committed.

Go to Best Friends now to learn how you can sponsor a dog (cat, horse or other animal) for just a few cents a month? I would be so happy if you would sponsor a dog in honor of Sophie…

High Blood Pressure (hypertension) is very common in our pets, but often goes undiagnosed until it leads to life threatening emergencies. Problems from high blood pressure arise when a blood vessel gets too small for the high pressure flow going through it. Since the affected vessels are small, the bleeding may not be noticeable but a lot of little bleeds and a lot of blood vessel destruction can create big problems over time.

Your pet’s retina is especially at risk, with either sudden or gradual blindness often being the first sign of latent high blood pressure. The kidneys are also targets since they rely upon tiny vessels to filter toxins from the bloodstream. High blood pressure also increases the risk of embolism: tiny blood clots that form when blood flow is abnormal. These clots can lodge throughout your pet’s body – including the brain.

But our pets do not have the same “external pressures” that can often trigger hypertension in their pet parents, so what causes this condition in our pets? There are numerous diseases in pets that are associated with high blood pressure, including:

o Chronic renal (kidney) failure – in one study, 93% of dogs with chronic renal failure and 61% of cats with chronic renal failure also had systemic hypertension;
o Hyperthyroidism – in one study, 87% of cats with untreated hyperthyroidism had systemic hypertension (hyperthyroidism is a feline disease only!);
o Glomerular disease – disease of the kidney filtration system in which protein is lost in urine. It is important to screen pets with high blood pressure for urinary protein as control of protein loss is important to survival time;
o Cushing’s disease (an adrenal cortisone excess) ;
o Diabetes mellitus (inability to properly reduce blood sugar) ;
o Acromegaly (growth hormone excess);
o Polycythemia (an excess in red blood cells) ;
o Pheochromocytoma (an adrenaline secreting tumor of the adrenal gland)

High blood pressure can be identified by screening at your veterinarian’s office. If your pet has one of the above-mentioned conditions, their blood pressure is generally checked. Older pets should have their blood pressure checked whenever they have a physical examination, particularly if they are over the age of 9.

Sadly, high blood pressure is discovered only after something untoward has happened to your pet physically (i.e. some degree of blindness or some other eye problem.) The retina of a hypertensive pet develops tortuous-looking retinal blood vessels; some vessels may even have broken, showing smudges of blood on the retinal surface. Some areas of the retina detach, or the entire retina detaches. With early identification, some vision may be restored, so do not let minor vision changes go unreported; tell your veterinarian know if you think your pet’s vision is abnormal.

Retinal changes can be complicated to interpret. Be prepared if your veterinarian refers you to a veterinary ophthalmologist. (Be sure to consult your veterinary insurance provider, as many cover specialist visits such as this.)

Blood pressure measurement is performed with an inflatable cuff fitted snuggly around your pet’s foot or foreleg; sometimes, the base of their tail can be used. The cuff is inflated to prevent blood flow through the superficial artery. With pets, an ultrasonic probe must be taped or held over the artery, and the sound of the systolic pressure is converted into an audible signal. In pets, this measurement should not exceed 160; a reading of 180 is considered by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine to indicate high risk for organ damage.

There are various treatment options for hypertension. When ocular disease is present, special eye drops may be required, depending upon how much the eye is bleeding and whether or not return of vision is likely; (a veterinary ophthalmologist is especially helpful in this scenario.) When hypertension is identified, a search for the underlying cause is indicated. It may be that controlling the underlying disease totally reverses the hypertension (particularly true for hyperthyroid cats).

Beyond these methods, as with people, blood pressure lowering medication is prescribed. This typically involves some type of pill that dilates peripheral blood vessels, making them larger to accommodate the high pressure blood flow going through them. Dietary restrictions may also be recommended by your veterinarian. Hypertensive patients should be rechecked every 2-4 months to keep their blood pressure in a healthy range.
